What is a medium voltage Sectionalizer?
12kv 24kv sectionalizer is a device that automatically isolates the faulty part of the distribution circuit after the upstream circuit breaker or recloser interrupts the fault current, usually installed downstream of the recloser.
The AutoLink sectionalizer segmenter is an isolation device that automatically isolates the faulty part of the overhead network in the event of a permanent fault.
The sectionalizer is an automatic switch that is installed downstream of the recloser. A recloser is a feature provided in circuit breakers that opens when a short circuit occurs on the line, such as a fallen tree branch. Usually, this short will clear itself, such as through a branch falling to ground.
An isolator is a switch used in power lines to fully open (physically) a specific section of the line when maintenance or modification work is performed. The isolator can be manually operated or, in some cases, opened by energizing the motor. For a three-phase system, the isolator opens all three lines. Therefore, the recloser opens the circuit when a fault occurs and recloses itself after a short interval and restores power to the system. A picture of the sectionalizer is shown below for visualization.
However, not all short-circuit faults clear themselves. For example, a fallen branch might cross the line without falling to the ground. The sectionalizer counts consecutive openings and closings of the recloser and opens after a preset number of times. Thus, it isolates the specific line section that has persistent faults, leaving most of the larger area protected by the recloser still energized.
Therefore, both devices are devices that isolate part of the power distribution system. But first and foremost a safety device to protect people working on the line. The second is an automatic device that cuts off power to the part where the persistent failure occurs.
